Public Benefits Assistant

As ELET’s Public Benefits Assistant, Rachel works closely with Public Benefits Specialist Hailey Michel-Evleth to help clients qualify and apply for public benefits such as TennCare (Tennessee’s Medicaid program) and VA Aid and Attendance. Rachel assesses clients’ resources, collects extensive documentation, researches old policies to determine their value, assembles benefits applications packets, and coaches clients through the process of gathering all the information they need to submit successful applications. Often, she is doing all of this under tight time constraints because of clients’ urgent needs to qualify for the programs that will pay for their care. Rachel’s analytical and organized nature make her well-suited to the technical challenges of this position. But beyond that, her compassion for her clients helps soothe frayed nerves so that they can get back to focusing on their families, work, hobbies, and other things that are important to them.

What is the problem you are best at solving for your clients?

Our clients are often experiencing one of the most difficult seasons of their life when they come to us. Acting as the role of Public Benefits Assistant means that I help mitigate the stress that can come along with applying for benefits programs. While my ultimate goal is to assist in creating accurate and compelling benefits applications, I also strive to be a reassuring and grounding force for my clients throughout the entire process.

What excites you about your work and the contribution you make to the ELET team?

Comprehensive healthcare is a fundamental human right. Unfortunately, our healthcare system is tricky to navigate and people often fall through the cracks. I find a lot of purpose in guiding and assuring people through such a system and helping them access the care and resources they need and deserve.

What do you love most about ELET?

I love that we all see each other as mentors. ELET values each team member’s input and expertise. I appreciate that we have a culture of communication and care. Such a work environment enables us to provide a high product value for our clients and meet their needs with integrity and compassion.

Where can we find you when you’re not working?

You can find me trying new restaurants around Knoxville, being with my friends and family, or reading a good book.
